COMING DOWN THE MOUNTAIN (short)

about

Coming Down the Mountain is a short fiction film that addresses the prescription drug abuse epidemic in Appalachia.  Starring Frank Hoyt Taylor and Kett Turton, the film follows a father and son as they confront issues of isolation and addiction in their secluded mountain community.  Based on first person accounts and news articles from the region, the film paints a sensitive portrait of a world often relegated to exploitative documentary exposés.

Shot on super16 and blown to 35mm, the film is a beautiful rendering of a part of the world that is rarely seen on film.   Shot in and around Whitesburg, Kentucky, the film takes advantage of a magnificent mountain landscape to highlight the dramatic contrast between the natural beauty of the community and the inner turmoil of the characters.

The film has played at festivals around the world, garnering numerous awards.  Some highlights include:

Clermont Ferrand  Short Film Festival (France)

Hamptons Film Festival (Student Film Award)

Florida Film Festival

Palm Springs International Short Film Festival

San Fancisco INDIEfest

Cork Film Festival  (Ireland)

Mill Valley Film Festival

Woods Hole Film Festival

LA Shortsfest

Long Beach Film Festival

Rural Route Film Festival (Best Narrative Film)

Dahlonega International Film Festival (Best Narrative Film)

Blue Ridge Southwest Virginia Vision Film Festival (Best Director; Best Screenplay)

Asheville Film Festival (Best Screenplay)

The film continues to play at smaller film festivals and on local television, especially throughout the Appalachian region.  Digital versions are now available online or for download.
